Vatican Splendors - Vatican FAQs

What is the Vatican? The Vatican is an independent state located inside the city of Rome covering an area of 17 square miles. It is the home of Pope Benedict XVI, the current head of the Catholic Church worldwide. The Roman Pontiff, who resides at the Vatican, as the successor of Peter, is the perpetual and visible principle and foundation of unity of both the bishops and of the faithful. In 1984, a concordat between the Vatican and Italy modified certain of the earlier treaty provisions, including the primacy of Roman Catholicism as the Italian state religion. About one billion people worldwide profess the Catholic faith. Who lives there? In addition to the pope, there are 400 residents including the Swiss Guard. How long has Vatican City State existed? While many of the properties were built centuries ago (during the existence of the Papal States, ended in 1870), including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican only became a state in 1929 when the...

SAN ANTONIO-(BUSINESS WIRE)-An unprecedented traveling exhibition of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci will tour North America beginning in 2008.

"Leonardo da Vinci's Machines in Motion," created by Worldwide Museum Activities (WMA) and organized by Evergreen Exhibitions, will bring from Florence, Italy the largest exhibition of full-size machine replicas, constructed according to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous codices. The exhibit will appear in science centers and natural history museums in major cities. Evergreen has begun solicitation for national sponsors of the tour.

With a large footprint that can be condensed to 5,000 square feet, "Machines in Motion" uniquely presents 40 functional actual-size working artifacts-as opposed to miniatures or static displays-built by a team of renowned historians and engineers who have studied Leonardo da Vinci’s codices.

Visitors can manipulate and fully activate the machines, which were designed based on the materials-rope, wood, glue, etc.-proposed by Leonardo da Vinci and the tools available at the time each was designed.

The exhibit is organized into five parts, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s study of the elements of nature and applied knowledge: earth, air, fire, water and mechanisms. Highlights include a revolving crane, a full-size armored car (large enough for several visitors to explore inside), a working robot, four flying machines, the bicycle, the printing press, floats for walking on water, the parachute and the machine gun.

The exhibition is of particular interest to students and young audiences, because it provides an engaging combination of education and entertainment in an experience that explores history, science, mechanics and physics, invention and innovation. The exhibit has appeared in Athens and Istanbul to broad audiences, positive critical reviews and substantial media coverage.

Evergreen Exhibitions (formerly Clear Channel Exhibitions), founded in 1992, is one of the world's premier providers of traveling museum exhibits. Evergreen conceptualizes, designs, produces, markets and tours its exhibits, primarily in science, natural history and children's museums. More than 80 million people worldwide have attended the company’s exhibitions.
Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion

Leonardo da Vinci is celebrated as a painter, sculptor, musician, architect, engineer and anatomist. Most enduring to his legacy are his inventions and designs. Machines in Motion presents 40 full-scale machines that were built after in-depth study of Leonardo da Vinci’s designs by a group of scientists and skilled craftsmen in Florence, Italy. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that many of the mechanisms are life-sized and fully operational. Visitors may touch and set them in motion, combining a fascinating hands-on experience with an exploration of the principles he employed to create each machine.

The machines are grouped into four sections based upon applications linked to the elements--air, water, land and fire--which held a strong fascination for Leonardo da Vinci. Exhibits include such visionary inventions as the helicopter and glider, the armored tank, the drive transmission, the printing press and the bicycle. Most of the materials used in the construction of these machines were available in Leonardo da Vinci’s era, and are the ones proposed by him in his codices, including wood, rope and glue. The materials were crafted by hand (using tools prescribed by the master himself), and then reinforced for the traveling exhibition.
The Enemy Within:

Evergreen Exhibitions and the International Spy Museum™ have announced the tour of a new exhibit exploring terror in America s own backyard. From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terrorism, The Enemy Within: Terror in America - 1776 to Today provides unprecedented perspective into terror on American soil. The exhibition uncovers the forgotten stories of domestic terrorists and foreign agents, militant radicals and saboteurs, who have threatened America’s sense of security over the past 200 years. It also explores the questions: how do we identify who the enemy is? And how do we keep the country safe without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded? The exhibit was created by the International Spy Museum™, which is located in Washington, D.C., and the traveling exhibit is organized by Evergreen Exhibitions. Travel Back through time to discover dramatic stories including: City of Washington Captured and White House Torched - 1814 Manhattan Hit by...
